Getting Started

How do I install Lumen Guard?

Installing Lumen Guard is simple:

  1. Download Lumen Guard from Google Play
  2. Open the app after installation
  3. Grant the "Draw over other apps" permission when prompted
  4. Start adjusting your screen dimming and warmth levels!
Tip: The overlay permission is essential for Lumen Guard to work. Without it, the app cannot display the dimming filter over other applications.
What permissions does Lumen Guard need and why?

Lumen Guard requires the following permissions:

  • Draw over other apps (SYSTEM_ALERT_WINDOW) - Required to display the dimming overlay on your screen
  • Foreground Service - Keeps an active filter overlay available while you use other apps
  • Notifications (optional) - Enables filter status updates and optional reminders; the filter still works when notifications are off
  • Internet and Google Play Billing - Support Google Mobile Ads in the free version and an optional premium purchase

“Display over other apps” is required for the filter itself. Advertising and purchase data are handled by Google as described in our Privacy Policy.

How do I enable the screen filter?

To enable the screen filter:

  1. Open Lumen Guard
  2. On the Home screen, toggle the power button at the top
  3. Adjust the dim and warmth sliders to your preference
  4. The filter will be applied system-wide

Features & Usage

What are Custom Scenes and how do I use them?

Custom Scenes allow you to save your favorite dim and warmth combinations for quick access. For example, you can create:

  • Reading Mode - Medium dim, high warmth
  • Movie Mode - Low dim, low warmth
  • Bedtime Mode - High dim, maximum warmth

To create a scene:

  1. Go to the Scenes tab
  2. Tap "Create New Scene" (Premium feature)
  3. Adjust dim and warmth levels
  4. Give your scene a name and save
Tip: Custom Scenes are a Premium feature. Free users have access to default scenes.
How does Smart Scheduling work?

Smart Scheduling automatically enables the screen filter at specific times. Perfect for evening eye protection!

To set up a schedule:

  1. Go to the Schedule tab
  2. Toggle "Enable Schedule"
  3. Set your start time (e.g., 8:00 PM)
  4. Set your end time (e.g., 7:00 AM)
  5. Lumen Guard will automatically activate during these hours
Do I need to allow notifications?

No. Notifications are optional. The filter and schedules still work if you leave them off, but you will not receive filter status updates or night reminders.

You can change this later from Android's app notification settings or the App Notifications item in Lumen Guard's Settings tab.

Tip: If you previously denied the notification request, use the app's Open settings button to manage it directly in Android settings.
What's the difference between Dim and Warmth?
  • Dim Level - Controls the overall darkness of the screen overlay. Higher values make your screen darker, reducing brightness beyond system limits.
  • Warmth Level - Applies a warm (orange/amber) tint to reduce blue light emission. Higher values provide more blue light filtering.

For best eye protection, especially before bedtime, use both a moderate dim level and high warmth level.

Troubleshooting

The filter isn't working. What should I do?

If the filter isn't displaying, try these steps:

  1. Check Permissions - Go to Settings → Apps → Lumen Guard → Permissions and ensure "Display over other apps" is enabled
  2. Restart the App - Close and reopen Lumen Guard
  3. Check if Enabled - Make sure the power toggle on the Home screen is ON
  4. Check Battery Settings - Some devices aggressively kill background apps. Add Lumen Guard to your battery optimization exceptions
The filter disappears when I switch apps

This usually happens due to battery optimization settings:

  1. Go to your device Settings
  2. Navigate to Battery or Battery Optimization
  3. Find Lumen Guard and set it to "Don't optimize" or "Unrestricted"
  4. Return to Lumen Guard and confirm the schedule is still enabled
Note: Different manufacturers have different battery optimization menus. Search for "battery optimization" in your device settings.
How do I exclude certain apps from the filter?

Currently, Lumen Guard applies the filter system-wide. If you need to temporarily disable it for specific tasks:

  • Use the quick toggle on the Home screen
  • Use the optional floating widget if you have enabled it
  • Use the status notification when notifications are enabled
Availability: Per-app filtering is planned for a future update.
The app is affecting my battery life

Lumen Guard is designed to be lightweight and battery-efficient. However, if you notice increased battery drain:

  • Make sure you're running the latest version from Google Play
  • Turn the filter off when you do not need it
  • Use Android's battery settings to check which apps are consuming power on your device

If battery drain persists, please contact support with your device model and Android version.

How do I uninstall Lumen Guard?

To uninstall Lumen Guard:

  1. First, disable the screen filter within the app
  2. Go to your device Settings → Apps
